Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh Continues To Recognise Young Local Sporting Stars

22 May 2023

Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh has celebrated the latest winners of the prestigious Sports Personality of the Month Award, with the winners from February and March showcasing the range of young sporting talent in the council area.

Sponsored by Decathlon, the award recognises the achievements and dedication of sporting stars in the Lisburn & Castlereagh area. The winners are selected each month by the Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh Executive Committee and a £100 voucher is awarded to each successful winner.

February’s Sports Personality winner, Ellie Patrick, was selected to play with Great Britain Ice Hockey Women’s Senior Team in the Four Nations Tournament in Poland in February. During her debut game, Ellie scored her first senior goal. This is a massive achievement as Ellie is only 16. She is now waiting to find out if she has been selected to play for the Great Britain Women’s Senior Team in the Ice Hockey World Championships in Korea.

Also at the age of 16, the Sports Personality winner for March, Paige Woods, not only is she one of the top Badminton players in Ireland in the U17 age group, but has also reached the semi-final stages of the Ladies Singles in the Irish Senior Nationals. She also reached and won the final of the Ladies Doubles in the Irish Senior Nationals, alongside her partner and sister Chloe Woods, beating last year’s winners in the semi-final. Paige continues to represent Ireland at U17 and U19 level.

Chair of Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh, Jimmy Walker, said, “I would like to congratulate Ellie and Paige on their amazing achievements in Ice Hockey and Badminton. What an achievement for these two young women who have received such accolades at their young age. I hope these two amazing athletes will inspire other clubs or families to make a nomination and showcase the breadth of sporting talent we have in Lisburn & Castlereagh.”

Treasurer of Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh, Adrian Daye, also said, “I am delighted that we can acknowledge another two months of sporting achievements through our Sports Personality of the Month Award. Lisburn & Castlereagh has a wealth of sporting talent competing at local and international level so it is fantastic that we can formally recognise the many clubs and athletes for their dedication and accomplishments.”
